Istarted working on the school paper my sophomore year in high school and by my senior year I was winning regional journalism competitions. Nevertheless, I didn’t study journalism in college and had no intention of writing as a career. A few years later I circled back to it when hunting down a second job in a small town with limited opportunities. A buddy showed me an ad in the weekly newspaper that said “If you like talking to people and have at least basic writing skills, you could be a reporter for the Sequim Gazette.” That’s how I started freelancing in 2004, and I’ve since written over 700 published articles about everything from shipwrecks to black-eyed peas, wedding trends to serial killers, Madagascar to Medicaid Part D.
